Among Wolves are beautiful, yet destructive at times.
The Among Wolves story started in Philadelphia in the winter
of 2001 with founder Billy Tiedeken, aka Haywood. Billy started
recording experimental lo-fi folk songs with chaotic sonic textures.
After moving to Baltimore in early 2004 he met up with an old
friend, Jimmy Cahill, also from Philadelphia. Right away the two
began writing and recording songs in a small Baltimore apartment
on Saint Paul Street in the Charles Village neighborhood. Among
Wolves was born.
Billy and Jimmy had the desire to create interesting but accessible
music which pushed them to become more creative with sounds and
production ideas. Using instruments like the theremin, short wave
radios, old casio keyboards, toys, and synthesizers, the sound
became more than just quiet lo-fi folk. In a span of about nine
months they recorded over 70 songs and were getting a hundred
plus plays a day on various websites.
This collaboration caught the attention of multi-instrumentalist/producer
Jason Butcher and bassist/drummer Dave Godman. When their band,
Chivalry, fell apart, the two joined Among Wolves. With this new
addition, the band became the beast that it is today providing
“the perfect Grizzly Bear/Beach Boy/Beach House harmonies
to start and end your days” (Butter Team). Their self-titled
Beechfields debut was released to great acclaim in 2007.
The current lineup has been playing all over Baltimore and the
East Coast for several years, and has gained a reputation for
their energetic live shows and crowd participation.
After working at Wright Way Studios on and off for the past year,
Among Wolves will be releasing its second full length record on
The Beechfields Record Label in early 2010. In the meantime, two
previously unreleased tracks appear on The Beechfields' 2008 compilation
CD, This City of Neighborhoods.
“The music of Among Wolves is not what you might expect.
This collection of tunes is accessible, digestible, and yet firmly
to the left of anything you’d hope to find popping up in
the mainstream (or the underground for that matter). Devilishly
clever, you wonder if they were at that famous crossroad along
with Robert Johnson making that deal too.” (Smother)

by Voices, Gram Parsons, Flaming Lips, Townes Van Zandt.
