Brother John is the moniker of John Purvis,
a recording engineer and producer from Pittsburgh, PA. While graduating
from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, John ran a production studio
in Maryland during the early and mid-90’s called Tone Matrix.
This studio was a hub of activity for fledgling artists from Maryland
to New York, and helped to shape the musical direction for the
low-fi musical artist Pupa’s Window, some of whose records
John recorded and produced.
During that time he began to write and produce experimental and
electronic music and self-release the records under the umbrella
of Tone Matrix. Immediately, people were drawn to Brother John’s
unique style – mixing experimental, ambient, hip hop, and
electronica with elemental pop – and he garnered a substantial
underground following. With the release of “Insomnic Mirage”
in 1997 he began to receive critical acknowledgement for his work
as well, and also was able to earn airplay on both college and
commercial radio in a time when experimental electronica was not
receiving much attention from either market.
After a break to relocate his operations permanently to Pittsburgh
in 1999, Brother John has begun to re-establish the foundations
he forged a number of years earlier with his joining The Beechfields
Record Label in 2006. His latest record, Average (Part
1): Numerator, is a stellar introduction and re-introduction
to his unique style and interesting, gripping music.
This record pulls in an eclectic mix of elements from bands like
Yo La Tengo and Air, all the way to New Order, Nine Inch Nails
and LJT Bukem. From ambient to atmospheric drum and bass to standard
electronica all mashed up with elemental pop, this musical journey
is both exhilarating and concise. As Brother John says about his
own music, “You listen. You decide.”
